10 Interesting Novel Interfaces

Novel Interfaces

10. Microsoft Courier tablet

Back in 2010, Microsoft needed a solution to Apple’s recently unveiled iPad tablet. What Microsoft came up with is a tablet called the Courier, similar to a notebook with two screens it is a unique example of user interaction with tablets. Unfortunately, the tablet had to be scrapped due to battery issues.

9. Leap Motion - https://www.leapmotion.com/
Leap Motion is a unique device that allows users to interact with their PCs using hand gestures. With an $80 price tag this device is gaining popularity across the globe since being released in 2013.

 8. OpenLase - https://marcansoft.com/blog/2010/11/openlase-open-realtime-laser-graphics/
Using software to drive lasers to project images is what the software library OpenLase tries to accomplish. The software can be used to project dynamically produced images with a laser projector.

 7. Wacom Inkling - http://www.wacom.com/en/gb/creative/inkling
The Wacom Inkling manages to turn any ordinary page in to digital one. By recording a specialized pen's movements it is able to digitally recreate the content that is drawn on the page.

 6. Virtuix Omni - http://www.virtuix.com/
Virtual reality using a omnidirectional treadmill would be very cool! This is what the Virtuix Omni attempts to create.

5. Fitbit - http://www.fitbit.com/uk
Fitbit is a group of products that records the daily activities you do. By making it easier to record what food you have eaten, how many calories you have burned and where you have traveled it plans to help you improve your life.

4. Makey Makey - http://makeymakey.com/
Turning any object in to an interactive one is an interesting idea. Makey Makey makes this possible by using electrical impulses to sense if an object has been touched or not. Check the link for more information.

 3. Touché - http://www.disneyresearch.com/project/touche-touch-and-gesture-sensing-for-the-real-world/
Touché (similar to Makey Makey) can recognize how a 3D object is being interactive with; it can detect whether or not I'm interacting with 1, 2 or even 3 fingers. Application for this could be smart light switches where you can touch how intense you want the light to be.

 2. Smart Contact Lens - http://googleblog.blogspot.co.uk/2014/01/introducing-our-smart-contact-lens.html
Google has recently begun researching smart contact lenses. These lenses plan to be able to display vital information to the user such as the user's blood sugar levels for diabetics. When made, these contact lenses will change how we live.

 1. Augmented Reality Sandbox - http://idav.ucdavis.edu/~okreylos/ResDev/SARndbox/
Teaching people is through intuitive interfaces is a major research topic at the moment. The Augmented Reality Sandbox plans to show children how water interacts with land in a large scale by projecting 1:1000 simulation of water down on to the sandbox. Rivers can be landscaped by moving the sand and rain water can be made by using hand gestures. I believe this project has a lot of potential.
